Vintage Widebody Ford Mustang Gets Coyote V8 Heart Transplant In A Shed
Some of the most incredible builds don’t require a state-of-the-art garage.
An owner of a first-generation Ford Mustang gave his classic pony car a new lease on life by swapping a Coyote V8 – one of the most versatile engines out there – under the hood, along with other performance upgrades that make the build crazier than its slightly dilapidated appearance might suggest. All the modifications here were done at home, showcasing the skills of its owner, Ryan.
Under the hood is a 5.0-liter Gen 1 Coyote V8, which makes 412 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque from the factory. We’re unsure of the exact output figure as no dyno sheet was provided, but Ryan said Lund Racing tuned the engine. This replaced the car’s inline-six when he bought the unit for $3,500.
Outside, the car may look tame and unassuming, but it features a long list of mods under the shell. The engine is connected to a TR6060 Tremec six-speed manual paired with a Centerforce clutch and Ford Performance short-throw shifter. Power is sent to the Ford nine-inch rear axle with a 3.89 gear ratio.
The wheels are far from factory spec, replaced by a set of custom 18-inch wheels wrapped in Falken RT660 tires (295/30R18 at the front and 315/30R18 at the rear). The wheels are matched with Wilwood six-piston brakes and a Rod & Custom RC107 Kit with QA1 adjustable coilovers.
Style-wise, the classic Mustang gets a Maier Racing Adams widebody kit, adding four inches to each side. A S&W Performance spoiler and a subtle chin spoiler complement the wider body. At the rear, the owner opted for 396maro LED sequential taillights. The ‘Stang also gets a custom hood with clearance for a Whipple supercharger and a custom exhaust responsible for that V8 muscle car rumble.
Sure, the dirty look of this 1965 Ford Mustang may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but the extensive performance mods and the modern engine make us want to know what it’s like to be behind the wheel.
