The Ford Super Duty Has Some Amazing New Features
Including a fighter jet-inspired head-up display.
The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty (and the F-350 and F-450 versions) comes with some impressive new pieces of technology, including a head-up display Ford claims was inspired by fighter jets. To show off these new features, the Blue Oval posted a new advertisement titled ‘For The Builders’ with legendary actor Bryan Cranston lending his voice.
Ford added a head-up display to the Super Duty, which was updated for the 2023 model year. The HUD gives drivers quick access to vital stats such as speed, gear, and RPMs and was inspired by fighter jets. Drivers can select from Normal Mode, Tow-Haul Mode, or Off-Road Mode, each of which prioritizes different information.
“We wanted to create an amazing digital experience for our most-focused truck customers, and our research led us to look at aircraft HUD concepts because of their task-oriented hierarchal structures,” said Mark Sich, Ford’s digital design manager.
“But because pilots are trained to read information in a very prescribed and technical manner, our implementation needed the interaction to be more intuitive for the driver to immediately understand the context of the information being presented,” he explains.
Ford says over 90% of Super Duty owners use their trucks to tow, which is why the updated PowerStroke diesel engine offers gooseneck towing of up to 40,000 pounds, enough to require a commercial driver’s license. That diesel engine produces best-in-class output ratings of 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. There’s also a new standard 6.8-liter gas V8 with 405 hp and 445 lb-ft, plus an updated 7.3-liter V8 with 430 hp and 485 lb-ft.
To make towing even easier, the Super Duty comes with an available feature called Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. The truck uses machine learning and computer vision to align the hitch ball to a conventional trailer coupler with the press of a button. We’d love to see the Cybertruck do that without crashing.
Other impressive features on the Super Duty include Pro Power Onboard with 2.0-kilowatts of output, rear parking sensors that still work with the tailgate down, onboard scales to measure weight in the bed, trail turn assist, and special navigation that can factor in your trailer size.
“This truck represents the pinnacle of Built Ford TOugh strength and capability, now with advanced technology that makes towing and hauling even easier and businesses more productive. Whether you are towing a boat for weekend family fun, operating a boom lift to fix powerlines, or hauling heavy loads while navigating hills and tough terrain, the all-new 2023 Super Duty not only tackles the task with ease, but its smart connectivity will surprise our customers with ingenious new solutions to transform their truck experience,” says Tim Baughman, General Manager, Ford Pro, North America.
