Ford Will Provide Free NACS Fast Charging Adapter For EV Owners
Ford EV owners will soon be able to use Tesla’s massive Supercharger network.
Ford has announced that eligible EV owners can soon access Tesla’s massive supercharger network in the US and Canada; in a post on X, Ford CEO Jim Farley confirmed that the Blue Oval will soon provide complimentary fast charging adapters to Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners, allowing them to connect to NACS plugs in North America.
“This is our way of saying thank you! We want to make charging more convenient for our Ford EV owners, so we’re excited to add Tesla chargers and will continue growing our BlueOval Charge Network,” Farley wrote on the social media platform.
The timeline for the delivery of the adapters hasn’t been set, but Farley promised that reservation lanes will open soon.
Farley has revealed that only 2021-2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E and Ford F-150 Lightning owners will be eligible for the complimentary adapter. Other plug-in Fords, like the Escape Hybrid, aren’t included. Eligible Ford EV owners will be validated through VIN, with only one adapter to be provided per car.
Details of the reservation process and the technical specifications of the adapter are yet to be revealed.
Ford will also handle the shipping costs for customers apart from providing the free fast-charging adapter. Farley also promised that activating and charging will be seamless, while the payment process will be handled through FordPass or the in-vehicle Public Charging app.
The NACS adapters will only be a temporary solution. In 2025, all next-generation Ford EVs will come standard with NACS ports, so there won’t be a need to use an adapter to use Tesla’s Superchargers. A spokesperson also confirmed that Ford’s BlueOval Charge Network in North America would eventually come with plugs for NACS ports.
Ford was the first major automaker to announce the adoption of NACS last year, resulting in other car brands following suit. Mazda was the latest to join the trend, with Stellantis the only remaining major automaker not announcing the move.
With Ford’s complimentary NACS adapter, other brands are expected to provide a similar service soon, but again, Ford did it first.
