Before the first generations of the Ford Ranger hit the market in 1982, Ford’s mid-size truck offerings in North America from the ’70s used to be versions of Mazda trucks, courtesy of the Ford/Mazda partnership at the time, and called the Courier. That first-generation Ford Ranger covered model years 1983-1992 and was a proper home-grown development and set the scene for the second generation, which sat on a little-changed frame but had more modern and aerodynamic styling. After just five model years, a redesign of the Ford Ranger was launched as the third generation of the truck in 1998. This Ford Ranger would be on the market for 14 years and across three facelifts along the way. The Ranger then went away for eight years before the T6 generation, which had been on sale for a long time in overseas markets at that point, made a belated entry to the US market as a 2019 model. It was around for only four years before the current fifth generation went on sale for MY2024, based on an updated T6 platform.
The latest 2024 Ranger isn’t a complete redesign after five generations and sits on an updated T6 chassis, while still offering the same 270-hp 2.3L turbo-four and 10-speed automatic, but with a 2.7L twin-turbo V6 with 310 hp and the same transmission added to the list.

After an eight-year dry spell, the T6 was introduced to the US market, dramatically modernized with modern infotainment and a turbocharged 2.3L inline four-cylinder engine with 270 hp and a 10-speed automatic transmission.

By the time the third facelift arrived, there had been year-on-year changes to the Ford Ranger in terms of styling and powertrain updates. The 2006 Ranger came with a 143-hp 2.3L inline four-cylinder engine, a 148-hp 3.0L Vulcan V6, and a 207-hp 4.0L Cologne V6, the latter lifted from the Explorer. Transmissions all had five speeds, whether they were manual or automatic.
