There have been no fewer than 14 Ford F-150 generations, and it’s been the top-selling vehicle in the US for decades. It’s always offered Americans everything they needed in a full-size truck and has grown in ability and polish year after year, with changes to the Ford F-150 formula carefully considered to retain its durability and appeal. Innovation was always part of this recipe, so for years, every redesign of the Ford F-150 brought new advances, such as the aluminum-intensive construction of the 13th-gen truck in 2014 and the efficient, downsized turbocharged EcoBoost engines as long ago as the 12th generation, while all the competition was still using big V8s only. But V8s have remained a part of the modern F-150 range, even today, and Ford will continue to provide them as long as customers want them.
The 2024 facelift doesn’t come with many changes, but notable is the discontinuation of the base naturally aspirated 3.3L V6.

The 14th generation debuted with no huge advances but a refined recipe. A 430-hp hybrid was made available for the first time across the F-150 generations, as was a turbo-diesel 3.0L V6 with 250 hp to go with the existing EcoBoost V6s and Coyote V8.

The P552 facelift came with a restyle, a new 10-speed automatic transmission co-developed with GM, and a raft of updated engines. The base engine was now a NA 3.3L V6 with 290 hp, but others included turbocharged V6s (a 2.7L with 325 hp or a 3.5L with 375 hp or 450 hp), plus the Coyote 5.0L V8 with 395 hp.

The P552 was a quantum leap forward, ushering in not only aluminum-intensive construction to save nearly 600 pounds of weight, but also Ford’s now-familiar C-Clamp headlights and squared-off truck styling. All trims had six-speed automatic transmissions, and more EcoBoost V6s joined the engine lineup, including a 2.7L unit. The Boss 6.2L V8 was out, but the 5.0L Coyote V8 remained.

By the time of the MY2013 facelift, the P415 had a greatly expanded engine lineup, including a new NA 3.7L V6, a twin-turbo EcoBoost 3.5L V6, and the new 5.0L Coyote V8, with outputs topping out at 411 hp in the case of the Boss 6.2L.

The P415 was the next generation of Ford F-150 for the model years 2009-2014. The powertrains initially remained similar to that of its predecessor, with the 4.6L/5.4L Triton V8s in various outputs up to 320 hp, but no more base V6. More power was added to the Ford F-150 over the years, including a 400-hp 6.2L Boss V8, which also came with the six-speed automatic transmission that would become commonplace in later years. The 12th-gen truck was the first F-150 to drop the manual transmission completely.

The smoothly contoured 11th generation was launched in 2003 as a 2004 model and sat on a new platform with a fully boxed frame. The 4.2L Essex V6 did duty as the base engine, with 4.6L and 5.4L versions of the Triton V8 also available. There were changes to the feature availability and a new limited-edition trim for the MY2006 facelift, but hardly any mechanical changes.
