So a recall has been issued before the risk results in any injuries.
Ford has filed a safety recall with the NHTSA for 1,339 Super Duty pickup trucks for driver and passenger windows that have to potential to go on a diet of human fingers. Fortunately, the affected 2023 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 models are yet to taste human flesh, but the risk is present that low power during window operation would result in the anti-pinch function not detecting an object and could close instead of reversing its movement.
The affected models were produced between January 3 and March 1 of 2023 and were each equipped with non-production intent software for the Driver Door Module (DDM) and Passenger Door Module (PDM) through an incorrect product flash from an external contractor.
Fortunately, the risk of failure requires a very specific set of circumstances that includes power to the DDM and PDM dropping beneath 6 volts, which is only likely to occur when the windows are in motion while trying to start the trucks when the battery is below 20% charge. Basically, it’s a very slim likelihood of the stars aligning in such a fashion while your fingers are dangling out the window.
The fix is as simple as visiting a Ford or Lincoln dealership where the software will be updated, which Ford also says may possibly be completed via a future Ford Power-Up update. Naturally, the fix will be conducted at no cost to the vehicle owners.
The number of affected units is:
Ford seemingly can’t catch a break this year and still leads the list of automakers with the highest number of recalls. CEO Jim Farley has admitted this is a problem, and the Super Duty was supposed to be the first model line to test out the brand’s new quality control standards and protocols.
“These products are critical,” said powertrain engineer Paul Murray. “Quality is critical. Good enough is not good enough. We have got to exceed expectations.”
This recall is a minor setback, but a setback nonetheless. At least no one has been hurt, and the risk is less severe and widespread than the nearly 900k Ford F-150s recently recalled for potential parking brake failure.
